John Howard Stephens died peacefully at home of congestive heart failure on Saturday, September 10, 2016. He was 92. Mr. Stephens was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 5, 1924 to the late Charles E. and Eula O. Stephens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Louise Patrick. In World War II, he served in the United States Army as a combat medic and a surgical technician in the 292nd Medical Detachment in the European Theater. In the Korean War, he served as a 1st Lt. in the 151st Combat Engineer Battalion. He earned a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University. He worked as an engineer in power for Du Pont at the Seaford (DE) Nylon Plant and the Savannah River (SC) Plant for 33 years. Upon retirement from the Seaford plant in 1986, he worked several more years for the Diamond Group, an architect and engineering firm in Delaware. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Delaware and Maryland. Upon full retirement, he and Sue settled in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania where he enjoyed his hobby of carving and painting birds and being an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Willa Sue Ledeker Stephens of Macungie, PA; a son, John R. Stephens and fiancé, Holly Batts, of Springfield, VA; a daughter, Vanessa Sue Costantini and son-in-law, Robert A. Costantini, of Allentown, PA; and three grandchildren, Sarah E. Stephens, Timothy J. Costantini, and Rachel A. Costantini.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Bethany United Methodist Church 1208 Brookside Road Allentown. A calling hour will be held on Thursday, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the church.

Internment will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday, September 15, 2016, at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory to Bethany United Methodist Church, 1208 Brookside Road, Allentown, PA 18106 or Lehigh Valley Hospice, 2166 South 12th Street, Allentown, PA 18103.
