Dennis W. Zehner, Sr.

Dennis W. Zehner, Sr., 64, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2016 in Allentown with his family by his side. Dennis was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Croydon, Bucks County. He was the son of the late George Zehner, Jr. and Marie (Deckert) Zehner. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1970, and attended West Chester University. He met his wife, Barbara (Numbers) Zehner, at West Chester and they were married for 41 years this past June. Dennis and Barbara lived in Allentown for 40 years and raised a son, Dennis, Jr. Dennis was a volunteer firefighter for the Croydon Fire Company #1 for eight years, holding several offices before relocating to Allentown. He further pursued his passion when he became a City of Allentown firefighter and served on the force for three years. He went on to work in the trucking industry working for 20 years for several transportation companies as a dispatcher, distribution manager and operations/general manager. Later in his career he worked for the Allentown Area Ecumenical Food Bank as its Warehouse Supervisor and became President of its Board of Directors in 2014. One of Dennis’ proudest moments came in May 1999 when he earned a degree in Business Administration from Muhlenberg College seven days before his son, Dennis, Jr., received a degree from Lehigh University. Dennis was an intensely private man but he had a deep and powerful love of humanity and passion for giving to others, most especially to his family. He enjoyed rooting for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles and enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. His family was his life and he enjoyed coaching his son at Union Terrace Athletic Club, visiting different baseball stadiums with his son and fishing in his spare time.

Survivors: He will be greatly missed by his wife, Barbara (Numbers) Zehner; son, Dennis W. Zehner, Jr.; cousins; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Frank and his sister, Evelyn.

Memorial service 11:00AM Thursday, October 6, 2016 in the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, 16th & Hamilton Sts., Allentown.
