John R. Stefanik, Sr., 85, former Chief of Police of Allentown died December 2, 2016 in the Inpatient Hospice Unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was the husband of the late Dolores L. (Abati) Stefanik. John joined the Allentown Police Department in 1958 where he served for 37 years. He was promoted to Detective Sergeant serving 21 years in the Detective Bureau rising to Lieutenant and then Captain of all investigative units; he was then appointed Chief of Police before retiring in 1996. John attended many police schools including FBI Investigative School in DC, New York City Police Bomb School, and Inter-County Detective School in PA. He was an instructor of several investigative classes at the Allentown Police Academy. Born in Hazleton, PA he was the son of the late John and Susan (Popso) Stefanik. He graduated from Hazleton High School in 1948. John joined the Marine Corps and served during the Korean War with Weapons Co. 2nd 7th, 1st Div. Heavy Machine Guns where he was awarded 2 Bronze Stars. Returning from Korea, he was assigned to Marine Corps officers’ training school Quantico, VA as a small arms instructor until honorably discharged. He was a member of the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena Catholic Church, Allentown. He was a lifetime member of the following organizations: Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 10, American Legion Post 576, VFW Post 13 of Allentown, and the Mercantile Club of Emmaus where he was President.

Survivors: Son: John R. Stefanik, Jr. and his wife Lily of Atlanta, GA, Grandsons: Nathan and Kristopher , Brother: Robert Stefanik, and his wife Charlotte of Hazleton, PA and a Sister: Dorothy Pavlinski of Bethlehem, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a Sister: Lillian Morton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, at 10:30 A.M. in the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena 18th and Turner Sts. Allentown. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, from 7 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. in the J. S. Burkholder Funeral Home, 16th and Hamilton Sts. Allentown.
