Donald M. Romig, 88, of Allentown, passed away December 26, 2016 and has gone to be with his son Richard. He was the beloved husband of Patricia C. (Harring) Romig. They had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 22nd. Donald worked at the former Lucent Technologies in Allentown for 41 years, retiring in 1989 as supervisor in the mask department. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Marlan and Ruth C. (Weaver) Romig. Donald was a 1946 graduate of Allentown High School. He was an U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He enlisted in 1946, as a private and was assigned to the 88th Signal Co. of the 88th Infantry Division at Gorizia, Italy. He then served as an occupation force in the Trieste region of the Adriatic Sea, upon completion of his occupation mission, he was then assigned to the 82nd Signal Company, 82nd ABN Division and was discharged with rank of Technician 5th grade in 1948. Donald enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1948 and was assigned to Battery B, 73rd AAA Gun BN. He served as a Fire Control Chief and Range Platoon Sergeant and was promoted to SGT. In 1950, his unit was activated to serve in the Korean War. He served as the battery’s Range Platoon Sergeant in the air defense of Pusan Harbor. In 1952, MSGT Romig and his unit returned to state control at Indiantown Gap. In 1953, he was commissioned as a 2 LT and assigned to D Battery, 213th AAA Gun BN as Range Platoon Officer and was discharged from the PA National Guard in 1962 and was a member of the 213th Regiment in Allentown. His military awards and decorations include the WWII Victory Medal, Mediterranean Theatre of Operations Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars and the United Nations Service Medal. As an owner of his Adams Island Allentown cottage, he served as an Adams Island board member, former president and secretary. He was a former Boy Scout Master at Emmanuel Evangelical Church, was very involved with his father at Sport Car Rallies, he was very artistic and loved to travel with Patty to Europe and Thailand.

Survivors: Wife, Son: Michael D. Romig of Adams Island, Allentown, Grandson: Erik Romig of Black Hawk, CO, Daughter-In-Law: Lynn M. Romig of Adams Island, Allentown, Sister-In-Laws: Virginia wife of Donald Ziegler of Fogelsville and Joyce wife of Russel Schirmacher of Whitehall, Brother-In-Law: Richard Weaver and his wife Mary of Allentown and Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by a Son: Richard M. Romig.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, at 10:30 A.M. in the J. S. Burkholder Funeral Home 16th and Hamilton Sts. Allentown. Call Saturday, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. in the funeral home.
