Ferne Jeanette Schaffer

Ferne Jeanette Schaffer, 95, of Schnecksville, formerly of Allentown, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Howard Elias Schaffer, to whom she was married for 71 years before his passing. They were married in Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Phares G. Beer. Born in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Edwin L. and Jane J. (McEllroy) Hess. Ferne graduated from Allentown High School in 1939 and served for many years on the Class of ’39 Reunion Committee. After high school, she worked as a legal secretary for the law firm of Attorneys Gildner and Arner. She was also a secretary to Mr. Paul Greaser, Vice President of the former Hess’s Department Store. Ferne lived in the Philadelphia area during WWII, while her husband Howard worked at the Frankford Arsenal. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Allentown. She was a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and served the Women’s Service League. Ferne was a dedicated mother and homemaker, and was a joy to be with. She always had a friendly smile. She enjoyed traveling with Howard, spending summer vacations in Ocean City, NJ and winter vacations in Isla Del Sol in St. Petersburg, FL.

Survivors: Daughter: Pamela wife of Ray Walker of Loveland, CO, Son: Howard Schaffer of Schnecksville, Grandsons: Scott Walker and Jeffrey Walker and Great-Granddaughters: Abigail Margaret Walker and Alanna Madison Walker. She was predeceased by Twin Infant Daughters: Diane Elizabeth Schaffer and Infant Baby Schaffer.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, at 10:30 A.M. at St. John’s Lutheran Church 37 S. 5th St. Allentown. A calling hour will be held on Friday, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. in the Church.
