Joan (Downey) Salines Joan (Downey) Salines

Joan (Downey) Salines, family matriarch, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, January 6th 2017 in her seaside condominium in Stuart, Florida. Daughter of the late William and Kathryn (Blewitt) Downey and sister of the late William Downey Jr., Joan was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, where she graduated from Lincoln High School and attended Seton Hall University, proudly earning her certification as a Medical Technician in 1953. She worked at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital before meeting and marrying the love of her life, Dr. John Salines, and moving to Allentown, PA in 1955. With John, she raised three daughters, Judy, Catherine and Jane, managed their home with care, served as an active member of St. Catherine’s Cathedral in Allentown, and spent many memorable summers at Lake Wallenpaupack in the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains. Always an avid athlete, Joan worked to establish and then coach for the girls’ tennis program at Allentown Central Catholic High School. While at heart a tennis player, Joan grew to love golf, playing for many years as a member of Allentown and Stuart golf clubs. With her children grown, Joan devoted much love and attention to her five grandchildren (and later three great-grandchildren), with whom she shared a special bond, and enjoyed many sunny winters with her friends and companions on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Florida. Joan will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, her special wisdom, and her heart of gold.
