Rev. Dr. Grant E. Harrity, 90, of Phoebe Terrace, Allentown died Wednesday, January 25, 2017 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Anne W. (Markley) Harrity with whom he celebrated 67 years of marriage on October 29, 2016. Born in Lancaster, OH, he was the son of the late Rev. Dr. Ralph J. and Lillian B. (Romero) Harrity. A graduate of Altoona High School, Ursinus College, and the Lancaster Theological Seminary, he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Ursinus College in 1969. Dr. Harrity came to Allentown in 1961 where he served for 23 years as Pastor of St. John’s United Church of Christ, at 6th & Walnut Streets. Previously he had served parishes in Hagerstown, Coopersburg/ Friedensville and Sunbury. In 1984, he became the President and CEO of Phoebe Ministries, Allentown. He retired in 1994. Long active in Allentown area community affairs, Dr. Harrity served as a Trustee and Chairman of the board of HealthEast, the predecessor of Lehigh Valley Health Network. He was elected to two terms on the Allentown School Board and served 4 years as President. He was an organizer and first President of the Planned Parenthood Association of Lehigh County and served on the boards of the Lehigh County Historical Society, Public Health Nursing, Red Cross and the Allentown Library. He was a former Trustee of Cedar Crest College and served as the interim Director of the Lehigh County Historical Society in 2003 to 2004. At the time of his death, he was a Trustee of the Century Fund, the charitable trust established by the late Donald P. Miller, former owner and publisher of the Allentown Morning Call. He was a member of Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ, Allentown. Active in United Church of Christ affairs, Dr. Harrity served on the Board of World Ministries for 6 years and was a Delegate to several General Synods. In 1994, he was named Executive of the Year by the Council of Health and Human Services of the United Church of Christ. In 2015, Phoebe Institute on Aging honored him with the first Rev. Dr. Grant Harrity Award for Exemplary Service to the Aging.

Survivors: Wife; daughters, Patricia wife of Robert Ragan of Arlington, VA, Kim wife of Eric Giler of Boston, MA and Barbara wife of James Galligan of Hong Kong; 8 grandchildren; 1 step grandson; 1 great granddaughter.

Memorial Service: 11:00AM Tuesday in Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ, 620 W. Hamilton St., Allentown. Call 7 to 8:30PM Monday in the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, 16th & Hamilton Sts., Allentown. Interment is private.
