John S. Benko

John S. Benko, 91, of Allentown, PA passed away on April 19, 2017 in Fellowship Manor, Whitehall, PA. He was the widower of the late Jean M. (Beil) Benko who died in 2010 after sharing 55 years of marriage. Born in 1925 in Catasauqua, PA, he was the son of the late John M. Benko and Susan L. (Bercik) Benko. A 1943 graduate of Whitehall High School, John served his country in the U.S. Army 84th Infantry Division and began active combat duty in World War II from 1943-1945 in Holland, Belgium and Germany. He was a prisoner of war, was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and honorably discharged in November 1945. In 1946, John attended Lafayette College in Easton, PA with additional studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO, graduating in 1950 as a Geology Engineer. He worked for JE Greiner Co (Baltimore MD), US Dept of the Interior, Fuller Co (Catasauqua, PA) and ADC Company (Allentown, PA) before retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Allentown Rotary Club, serving on the Board of Directors for several years as well as serving on the Advisory Board of the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Center in Allentown, PA. An avid traveler and hiker, John also enjoyed photography, electronics, computers and reading.

He is survived by his daughter Jean (Benko) Scott and husband John of East Fallowfield, PA, son John J. Benko and wife Maureen of Whitehall, PA and grandchildren Kelly Scott, Dr. Michael Scott and Kameron Benko.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at 10:30 A.M. in the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena Catholic Church, 1825 W. Turner St, Allentown, PA 18104. Friends and relatives may call from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Thursday at the Church. Interment will be at St Lawrence Cemetery, Catasauqua, PA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
