He was the husband of the late Mary L. (Laudenslager) Guthrie. Born in Springfield, MA he was the son of the late Walter R. and Laura (Gale) Guthrie. Jack attended high school at Mount Herman School for Boys, Mount Herman, MA. After high school he joined the Navy serving his country during World War II. After the war, Jack attended the Hun School of Princeton, NJ and Lafayette College where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and graduated in 1951. In the early 1960’s along with his father, Jack founded Lehigh Sales and Products which later became known as the Lehigh Group. He operated the business until his retirement in 1985. During his life Jack was active in his community. He served on the Board of Directors for the Good Shepherd Home, the Board of Associates at Cedar Crest College, the Board of Directors of the YMYWCA of Allentown and Lehigh Country board and a member of the Rotary Club of Allentown. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown. Outside of work Jack had a passion for adventure. He was an avid aviator who had a lifelong passion for flying. Jack was an instrument rated pilot who owned several airplanes in his lifetime. It was nothing for Jack to suggest a quick trip to Washington D.C. for the day or to fly the family to the Bahamas to explore more remote spots. Always the outdoorsman, he was an avid skier, loved sport fishing, especially fly fishing and wanted to share his passion with his family. He purchased a beach house in Avalon, which became a family retreat for generations. He was the captain of his own catamaran and later a cabin cruiser. He loved golf, especially those Sunday mornings on the golf course with Dick Young, Henry Fetterman and Bill Miers. After retiring, Jack enjoyed woodworking and created many beautiful furniture pieces which are displayed prominently in his daughter’s and grandchildren’s homes. Jack enjoyed photography, even turning the family bathroom into his first dark room. The love of Jack’s life second to his wife and family was horses. As a young man, he worked as a groomsman with a nationally known standard breed trainer. He wanted to share this passion with his daughters and made sure they learned to ride. He along with his daughter trained and showed a horse. He founded Lehigh Farms in Kentucky and became a member of a stud syndicate to breed American Saddle Breeds. John was a devoted husband and was so proud of his daughters and grandsons.
